MIDI Thingamajig Control Panel
The MIDI Deets screen is basically a MIDI control panel—except it\u2019s actually useful. It shows every bleepin\u2019 thing OnSong® does with MIDI: what gear it talks to, the tempo it\u2019s crankin\u2019, the events it\u2019s sendin\u2019 while you play, how it handles incoming messages from other stuff, and what it puts on screen so you can watch the whole bonfire.
Connections
This is where the MIDI magic happens (or doesn\u2019t). Manages whether OnSong even bothers with MIDI, & how you plug devices in via cables, Bluetooth, whatever.
- MIDI Enabled — flip this if you actually want OnSong to yell at your gear
- Sources — shows which input devices OnSong is eavesdroppin\u2019 on; tap to tell it which ones to listen to
- Destinations — lists where OnSong\u2019s sendin\u2019 stuff; tap to control which devices get the messages
- Bluetooth MIDI — wireless MIDI pairing (shocking, we hid it somewhere else first)
- Network Session — talk to other computers over Wi-Fi like you\u2019re on the same LAN. Totes cutting edge, 2009 vibes.
- Virtual MIDI — lets OnSong chat with other iOS apps through a pretend MIDI cable. Digital BFFs.
Beat Sync
Sync tools that make OnSong & other gear keep time together & follow the beat clock. Ableton Link gets top billing cuz it\u2019s cooler than MIDI clock. (Sorry, MIDI clock. You\u2019re still great.)
- Ableton Link — join a Link session with other apps & devices on your network. No cables, no pairing, no drama.
- MIDI Clock — keeps tempo locked with 24 ticks per beat. Sync Mode: Lead sends the tempo OnSong is playin\u2019, Follow steals someone else\u2019s tempo, Both does both (that\u2019s where the old Listen ▸ For Tempo thing went, btw). Behavior decides if the clock keeps goin\u2019 or stops dead. Time Adjustment is for tweakin\u2019 MIDI clock speed if it\u2019s bein\u2019 finicky.
- Tap — configures \u201ctap the beat\u201d MIDI events
- Tempo — assigns a channel for CC 106/107 tempo transmission (fancy nerd stuff)
- Time Signature — broadcasts the meter as a standard notation message; Follow adopts an incoming meter, Lead blasts OnSong\u2019s meter into the void
Playback
How MIDI files actually play & when OnSong sends MIDI events into the abyss.
- Play MIDI Notes Through — picks where MIDI notes go during backing track playback. Multi-Channel Setup lets you assign a different destination per channel if you\u2019re fancy.
- Send MIDI Events To — routes control events. Basic Playback Setup gives you the easy button.
- Song MIDI Events — sends start/stop/continue commands to your gear, so hittin\u2019 the Audio Button in the Live Bar launches both OnSong and your external gear at the same time. Mind. Blown.
- Chord Note Events — plays chords through sound banks or MIDI to devices on a selected channel
- Velocity — how hard the chords hit (0-127 scale; defaults to 64). Crank it higher for LOUD, lower for \u201cpleeeease don\u2019t wake the neighbors\u201d
Control
How OnSong reacts to incoming MIDI messages. The boring but important knobs.
- Follow Chords — listens to note events & auto-detects chords to insert into the Song Editor. Turn it on, stick your cursor in the Song Editor, bang a chord on your keyboard, & watch it magically appear in your chart.
- Use absolute adjustments — reads MIDI values (0-127) as-is instead of relative motion. Needed for Variable Actions.
Broadcast
Sends song info via OnSong System Exclusive messages so other apps can get cozy with OnSong. Wanna build something? Peek at our Broadcast SysEx API.
Display Events
Watch MIDI stuff happen in real-time on screen. It\u2019s like a disco ball of data.
- Chord Events — flashes detected chords
- Control Events — shows CC activity (thrilling, we know)
- Note Events — displays Note On/Off
- Program Changes — shows program & bank select switcheroos
- Sequence Events — flashes start, stop, continue events
- One-Based Index (1-128) — shifts display from 0-127 to 1-128 (for peeps who count like humans)
- MIDI Note Start — pick your Middle C flavor (Yamaha C3 or Roland C4)
