The BPM Thingamajig

OnSong can yeet the current tempo of the song as a MIDI MSB/LSB control change, & it can vibe with a tempo sent the same way by another device. For instance, if the tempo of the song is 96, OnSong would set the first MSB MIDI command to 0 & the second LSB to 96. Combined, this would equal 96. If the tempo is set to 130, OnSong would send MSB 1 & LSB 2. Since the MSB is equal to the value multiplied by 128, this would equal 130 (128 + 2).

Sync Shenanigans

Pick how OnSong shares tempo vibes with other devices. The Bossin' Around & Copyin' Homework sections only pop up when their direction is turned on.

  • Off neither sends nor follows tempo. The boring default.
  • Both sends OnSong's tempo & follows tempo sent by another device. Besties mode.
  • Bossin' Around sends OnSong's tempo to other devices. You're in charge now.
  • Copyin' Homework adopts the tempo sent by another device. Let them lead for once.

Bossin' Around

These settings control how OnSong flexes its tempo to the world.

Freakin' Channel

Pick a channel or all channels for sendin' tempo. Whenever the tempo in OnSong gets a makeover, the MIDI values go out to tell compatible apps & hardware what's up. Setting the channel to Off will totally ghost MIDI & send nothin'.

Send It Again

By default, the tempo MIDI commands ship out once when the song loads. If you wanna remix the tempo or your MIDI devices are needier than a k-pop stan, you can send the MIDI on repeat. Options include: Continuously, Once (the snooze button default), Twice, 3 Times, 4 Times & 5 Times.

Chill Out First

This lets you tell OnSong to take a breather after the tempo changes before it starts yellin' MIDI commands everywhere. Options include: None (default), 1 Second, 2 Seconds, 5 Seconds, 10 Seconds, 15 Seconds, & 30 Seconds.

Space It Out

This lets you pick the wait time between each repeat of the MIDI commands. It only shows up when Send It Again is set to Twice or more, or Continuously, so don't flip if it ghosts you while Send It Again is on Once. Choosing more than one send sets it to every 2 seconds if it was Never. Options include: Never, & every 1, 2, 5, 10, 15 or 30 seconds.

MIDI Drop-Off

By default, OnSong will send MIDI tempo changes with Control Change events as CC 106/107. Since there's literally no standard control change for this tempo jazz, you might gotta customize this power couple. Enter the MSB & LSB controllers separated by a space, like "CC106 CC107." Skip the values tho—the value sent is the tempo itself, split up according to the MSB Tempo Recipe.

MSB Tempo Recipe

This number is the secret sauce for how the tempo gets divvied up between two MIDI events. Since MIDI caps out at 128 values, & tempos often run way hotter than that, you gotta use the MSB/LSB pattern that MIDI nerds came up with. The default is 128. So to send a tempo of 156 BPM, the first MIDI event would spit out a "1" (representing 128) & the second event would puke out the difference of 156-128 or 28. The receiving MIDI device smooshes these together, multiplies the first by 128 & adds the second, resultin' in 156. MIDI devices that actually get this have it in their docs & it's usually 100 or 128.

Copyin' Homework

These settings control how OnSong eavesdrops on tempo from other devices.

Freakin' Channel

Pick the channel, or all channels, that OnSong lurks on for tempo. Setting the channel to Off completely ignores any incoming tempo like it's your ex.

MIDI Drop-Off

The MSB & LSB controllers that OnSong listens to for tempo, like "CC106 CC107." By default, this mirrors the same power couple as Bossin' Around.

MSB Tempo Recipe

The number used to mush the two incoming values into a tempo. By default, this matches the Bossin' Around value. It gotta match what the sendin' device uses, or literally every tempo will get read wrong & everything's gonna be a hot mess.

If Bossin' Around & Copyin' Homework use the same channel & controllers, a lil' warning pops up below this section. If they're the same device, or MIDI loops back through Virtual MIDI or a network sesh, OnSong could hear its own tempo & it's gonna get real weird real fast.
